My workout with Chris LaLanne…
Sunday, September 07, 2008
From Chronicle Staff Writer Julian Guthrie
I was excited about the workout. I had been warned that it's not unusual to vomit after.
A group of 16 "students" of trainer Chris LaLanne -- the grand-nephew of fitness legend Jack LaLanne --- took off right at noon, jogging from Second and Howard Streets toward the Embarcadero. It was hot, about 83 degrees. The sidewalk was filled with workers on their lunch break. We were treated as a spectacle, like a sweaty flash mob.

Chris LaLanne has the look: shredded abs, shaved head, intense blue eyes. He has the degree in kinesiology, the years spent training elite athletes, and a new workout studio in downtown San Francisco. He was also born with the right name. Chris LaLanne, 32, is the grand-nephew of Jack LaLanne, the reigning "Godfather of Fitness," who ran his first gym out of his backyard in Berkeley in 1933, once did 1,033 pushups in 23 minutes, swam from Alcatraz to Fisherman's Wharf handcuffed, and at age 93 still works out two hours a day.

Jack LaLanne is believed to have opened the first modern health club in downtown Oakland — at 409 15th St., to be exact — in 1936. Initially, the concept went so poorly that LaLanne had to perform massages on the side to pay his rent.
Seventy-two years later, with the blessing and encouragement of the 93-year-old Godfather of Fitness himself, another LaLanne is carrying on the family tradition of improving and lengthening lives through fitness and nutrition. With any luck, he'll be just as successful and carry on just as long.
Employing some fresh twists on the CrossFit training methodology, Castro Valley's Chris LaLanne and his wife, Maribel, officially christened LaLanne Fitness at 590 Howard St. on Saturday with his world-famous and still-vibrant great uncle by his side.
"Chris listens to me, and he knows what he's doing, so he should do well," the elder LaLanne said prior to leaping on a podium to inspire a crowd of admirers with one of his familiar pep talks. "I'm very proud of him."...

[PROfile:Chris LaLanne] The Next Generation of Fitness
November 21, 2008 by Joe Stankowski
Chris LaLanne may not have accumulated all the records or awards as his iconic grand-uncle Jack (yet), but give him time. Assuming he inherited a few good genes through the family tree (combined w/his personal interest in all-things-fitness), I’m sure we’ll be hearing about Chris for many years to come.
In addition to his own fit-biz interests, he’s been tasked to manage the community/blog section of uncle Jack’s website.
Hope ya’ enjoy this li’l journey into the life and mind of Chris LaLanne…

CrossFit was created in the 1970s by a Californian named Greg Glassman, a former gymnast. He started tinkering around with the back-to-the-basics concept when he was working in a weight-lifting gym. He noticed that a lot of the exercises the bodybuilders were doing would make them bigger but not more effective...
