CrossFit Kids

Enriching your experience!

A look back at the DEATH-BY-BARBELL CHALLENGE FINALS reinforces the incredible sense of community and collective energy we maintain. The coaches and students come together and help motivate one another, often providing subtle reminders about proper mechanics. Sometimes the coach is using cues that are less effective than the student/friend beside them because the truth is... some cues work, some don't, that's called individuality. The fact is each one of us is responsible for improving the experience as a whole. Even if you don't ask for help, the chances are you'll get it from more than one person. We don't point fingers, there are no egos and there is no complaining.

We are all students of the CrossFit method and I encourage you to educate yourself and make an effort to understand the exercises and the methodology. So... next time you're in class, get involved and try helping someone, trouble-shoot and explain the movement in your own words. Communicate with one another and I promise it will go a long way towards enriching your experience!

Workout of the Day

5,5,5,5,5
-break
"ANNIE"
50-40-30-20-10 rep rounds for time of:
Double-unders
Sit-ups

No gym, no equipment and no space…

OK... let's say you're on vacation and there's no gym, no equipment and no space. Unable to leave the confines of your room and nothing but energy to expend. What can you do? As a CrossFitter, you'll go down the list of functional movements: Push-up, Dip, Sit-up, Squat, Pistol, Handstand Push-up, Jump, Lunge, etc... surely you can add a few more to this list. Now that you've got a few moves in mind, create a workout. I'm a big fan of the single modality workouts like; 400 meters walking lunges or 1,000 Air Squats. This will ensure muscular fatigue and increases in both strength and conditioning. Keep it simple and choose movements that allow you to hold the intensity. The rep count should produce a workout lasting anywhere from two-minutes to no more than thirty. So, yesterday I went off like a "SHOTGUN" For time: 50 Burpees...

Workout of the Day
Thruster
5,4,3,2,1
-break
"JACKHAMMER"
For time:
150 Thrusters 95/65#

Student Athlete of the Week

De-conditioned, over-weight and just plain out-of-shape is how I would describe him when we first met. Suffering from a series of injuries had caused his level of fitness to decline, unlike his athletic wife and kids. In January of 2010, he was ready to reclaim his body and his life... and I was there to help. He entered our 12-WEEK FAT LOSS CHALLENGE, finishing in 2nd Place with some impressive stats: LOST= 9.4 % BODY FAT, 22 POUNDS, 4.5 INCHES...

LaLanne Fitness image

Recently he participated in our Death by Barbell Challenge and took his shirt off for the first time during a workout at the Brickhouse. This moment (see above) was a high-point in his CrossFit journey that we started over 2 years ago. PAT is our "Student Athlete of the Week" and he continues to get stronger, faster and leaner. I'm very proud of PAT and his commitment to change! Any one else ready for change?

I saw that - I was like jeez - Pat's ripped, but it shouldn't have been surprising, he's always working out with a purpose and intensity. Great job.

THE BRICKHOUSE DEADLIFT LEADER…

Last Friday we had a few big DEADLIFTS... Most impressive of all was the one below. Unfortunately we couldn't get anymore plates on the bar so you'll notice a couple 53 LB. kettlebells hanging from the bar, making it a 515 pound lift (it was actually a double). LALANNE FITNESS adds another super strong, powerful athlete to the roster. Welcome to THE BRICKHOUSE BLAKE!

    Cyril/Brett,
Any student pulling 500+ is entitled to accessorize with purse, gloves, belt, etc.
  2. Brett K  on  08/13   at  11:10 AM
The Brickhouse is the only place in SF that you can pull a 500lb barbell off the sidewalk and still have your manhood called into question. too funny.

    ...damn impressive display of strength
  3. Cyril  on  08/12   at  11:22 AM
    Good stuff Blake!

But if you're going to use a belt, make sure it matches the color of your purse!

Adverse Affects of Drinking Milk by Pedro Bastos

"There is a large body of evidence that up until 9,000 years ago in the Middle East and 7,000 years ago in Northern Europe, no human being on the planet consumed non human milk or dairy products. So on an evolutionary time scale, non-human milk is a relatively newcomer into human diet. By using the evolutionary template, and knowing that that milk is species specific, we would expect this new habit to have unintended consequences, which go way beyond lactose intolerance (which is actually very common), since only a minor percentage of the world’s population continues to produce lactase into adulthood..."-READ MORE

Sarah, don't let Chris fool you I've seen old pictures of him from back in '05 carrying a 2pood shaped purse around town.

I know... Can you imagine walking in 24 hour fitness to find bloody, sweaty equipment. It would be appauling!

One of my favorite personalities in the CrossFit community is Mark Rippetoe. Here's a quote I've borrowed that serves me well...

"If you insist on wearing gloves, make sure they…
  3. Sarah Lynn  on  08/11   at  10:42 AM
If that's not an argument for wearing gloves in the gym, I'm not sure what is!
